A second man arrested in connection with the death of a man Sheffield city centre has been bailed by detectives.

Police were called after a 42-year-old man, who has not yet been named, was rushed to hospital with life threatening head injures after being attacked on Friday night.

He was assaulted at the junction of West Street and Eldon Street, close to the Mode bar, at 11.50pm.

The man could not be saved and died in hospital the following day.

A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and later granted bail after a weekend of questioning.

Police officers then arrested a second man, aged 31, who was held on suspicion of assisting offenders.

He too has been bailed pending further inquiries.

Police sealed off the area where the man was attacked that night while an examination of the area was carried out.

An appeal for information has been issued, with detectives keen to hear from anyone who saw what happened before or during the attack.
