A POLICE operation was launched after Neighbourhood Watch members in Broomhill, Hillsborough and Woodseats were asked to report scrap metal vans driving around their suburbs so checks could be carried out on traders.
the crackdown was organised after officers received a number of complaints from residents worried about scrap collectors.
Officers from the Vehicle and Operator Standards Agency joined police and environment enforcement officers to check seven collectors stopped on the roads.
Five had the correct licences and insurance but two were interviewed for not having a licence and one vehicle was seized for having no insurance.
Ten commercial vehicles were served with prohibition notices at a checkpoint.
