Machete gang grabs Co-op cash and cigs
Robbers brandishing a machete escaped with cash and cigarettes from a shop after attacking a member of staff and demanding money.
They struck at the Co-op on High Street, Ecclesfield, when a member of staff was outside. They assaulted him and dragged him back inside and made further threats of violence before fleeing in a blue car.
A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “It is believed a member of staff who was outside the store at the time was assaulted by some males before being taken back into the store.
“It is believed the males who were wearing face coverings, entered the store, threatened the staff and demanded money.
“They then left with money and cigarettes in what is believed to be a blue car, which is thought to have driven off at speed.
“A member of staff sustained a minor leg injury, but no-one else was injured. However, the members of staff were left understandably shaken up by their ordeal.
“Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with any information is urged to contact South Yorkshire Police on 0114 220 2020.”
A spokesman for The Co-operative said: “There was an armed robbery at the store at around 6.15am on Friday, September 16. A member of staff suffered a minor injury, and was left badly shaken. No customers were in the store at the time. CCTV footage has been given to the police and we would appeal for anyone with information to come forward.”
