Police in South Yorkshire have moved to quash rumours of a sinister clown roaming the county’s streets.
Social media sites are awash with alleged sightings – but a police spokeswoman said no formal complaints have been made to the force nor any confirmed sightings.
She said: “We are aware of reports on social media of a clown on the streets in South Yorkshire. There have been no actual sightings reported.”
However the spokeswoman said that, since reports on social media networks have escalated over recent days, a number of people have phoned police with concerns.
She said although no crimes have been reported, one person did claim to have seen a clown – but officers found nobody there. In Doncaster – where identical rumours are swirling – officers used Facebook to reassure the public. “This has gone viral throughout the country,” they said. “Please reassure your children.”
The rumour stems from Northahampton where a man is dressing as the clown from horror film It.
