A CONMAN who tricked his way into an elderly couple’s house - hours before one of his victims died - is still being hunted by police.
The man called at 80-year-old Selwyn Shelbourne’s home claiming he was dealing with a blocked drain. He was allowed in by the pensioner and his wife.
Police said he ‘kept them occupied in the kitchen’ before he left.
The OAPs later discovered a biscuit tin containing cash had been taken from a bedroom.
Mr Shelbourne fell ill later the same day and died in hospital.
Officers investigating the incident in Carsington Close, Chesterfield, discovered a similar incident had happened on nearby Sycamore Avenue the same day.
Det Insp Andy Jones said: “This is an all too familiar example of criminals targeting vulnerable people.
“This type of offence causes fear and upset - especially when the end result is the death of a much-loved husband and father.
“I appeal to anyone who saw two males acting suspiciously around either Carsington Close or Sycamore Avenue to get in touch with police.”
Anyone who has any information about the incident at 6.30pm last Tuesday should call police on 101.
