Police officers investigating vandalism in a memorial park have branded the attack ‘disgusting’.
A tree dedicated to fallen soldier Sergeant Lee Davidson, was snapped in half in Thorne Memorial Park earlier this week - devastating the war hero’s family.
Sgt Davidson, whose wife Samantha was expecting his third child when he was killed, was in an armoured vehicle which was hit by a roadside bomb in September 2012.
Today, Inspector Mark Payling, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “This a truly disgusting act of completely mindless vandalism.
“It doesn’t get much lower than damaging a memorial to a local man who gave his life for his country.
“As you would expect we are doing everything we can to identify those responsible and I would appeal to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning speak to officers.”
Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting incident 336 of September 23.
