Police deny guns were fired in arrest

POLICE surrounded a car on Manchester Road, Crosspool, Sheffield, in a pre-planned operation to arrest a man in his 20s.

Local residents claimed they had heard the sound of gunfire, but South Yorkshire Police said officers did not discharge any guns.

A force spokesman said: “Nobody was injured as a result of the police operation that took place at around 4pm on Saturday.

“Local officers conducted house-to-house visits to reassure local residents following activity in their area. Police did not discharge any shots as part of this proactive operation.”

Burglar escapes

A BURGLAR drove off on a red scooter after being disturbed breaking into a house on Heeley Bank Road, Heeley, Sheffield. Police said the burglar was spotted at around 1.15pm last Wednesday.

In Beauchief two cars parked outside a property on Folds Lane were taken after their keys were stolen during a break-in on Sunday, March 18.

Metal pipes stolen

METAL pipes were stolen from an outhouse on Albert Road, Meersbrook, Sheffield, on Thursday morning. The plumbing was also stolen from an unoccupied property on Spotswood Close, Gleadless Valley, at some point between March 14 and 18. Police are investigating.

Bin set alight

A WHEELIE bin was set alight outside a house on Valley Road, Meersbrook, Sheffield, in the early hours of yesterday. Firefighters said the blaze caused some heat damage to a garage but the main property was unaffected.

Alcohol test at shops

POLICE carried out a test purchase operation at 16 off-licences in and around Mosborough and Woodhouse to look for any selling alcohol to underage customers. Two were caught selling to children.

Arson attack

AN OUTHOUSE on Staniforth Road, Darnall, Sheffield, was set alight in an arson attack. Firefighters were called out to the blaze at 9pm on Sunday.

Blaze in phone box

FIRE crews dealt with a blaze in a phone box started deliberately on Ridgeway, East Herringthorpe, Rotherham, at 9pm on Sunday.
