A BARNSLEY off-licence has agreed to stop selling alcohol over the Bank Holiday weekend after failing two test purchase operations.
The shop - Food and Wine, on Dearne Road, Bolton-upon Dearne - was caught selling to under-age customers on two separate occasions.
Police have the right to ask businesses to stop trading for 48 hours if they fail two consecutive test purchase checks, where under-age customers are sent in to buy alcohol.
Chief Inspector Shaun Morley said: “We want to tackle under-age drinking throughout Barnsley and if we can get licensed premises to be extra vigilant then we are some way to achieving this.
“We are wanting licensed premises to work with us and hold some responsibility when it comes to underage drinking.
“Asking for a voluntary closure for 48 hours is the last resort but if licensed premises consistently fail to take responsibility for this issue then we will have no hesitation in using this power ensuring under-age drinking is kept to a minimum.”
Police want all licensed premises to ask for proof of age if customers look under 25.
