Nightclub’s banned from promising students can ‘get laid’

Organisers of a student club night in Sheffield have been rapped by the advertising watchdog for promising freshers they could ‘get laid’.

The Get Laid night, held at the Replica Nightclub, Charter Square, every Tuesday, was promoted by Eat My Disco on Facebook and on a flyer showing a scantily-clad woman with a speech bubble coming from her shorts, saying ‘You’re going to get laid’.

The ad also offered students drinks priced at £1.50 all night.

It was banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) after it was found to link alcohol with sexual success.

The ASA challenged the promotion on the grounds it breached guidelines by linking alcohol with sexual activity and featured people under 25 in a prominent position.

The watchdog said: “We considered the statements ‘Get laid’ and ‘You’re going to get laid’ were intended to be humorous references to attending the event with a view to finding a sexual partner. We noted the ad also stated ‘£1.50 drinks all night’ and considered that by including a reference to alcohol alongside the sexually-suggestive text, the ad breached the code by linking alcohol with sexual success.”

One objection claiming the ad was ‘offensive and irresponsible’ because it appeared to depict youths under the age of 16 and ‘sexualised children’, was rejected by the watchdog.

Eat My Disco said nobody under the age of 18 appeared in the ad.

Defending its cheap drinks campaign, it insisted it had not linked alcohol to sex and said its drinks prices had been cleared through licensing authorities in Sheffield.

But the company admitted the speech bubble from the girl’s shorts was an ‘error’ and it should have been from her mouth.

Dave Henning, of Eat My Disco, said: “While we accept the ruling, there was never any deliberate intention to breach the code. We have an enviable record advertising and arranging events in Sheffield and regret our humorous ads – aimed at students - infringed the ASA rules.”
