NEWS IN BRIEF: Sub station fire cuts power to homes

SEVERAL homes were left without power on Saturday night when a fire broke out at an electricity sub station in a Sheffield suburb.

Firemen stopped the blaze spreading to buildings after residents spotted smoke coming from behind a large warehouse on Darnall Road, Darnall. The cause is being investigated.

In Thurcroft, Rotherham, vandals were to blame for a blaze that damaged outhouses containing gardening equipment behind homes on South Street at around 8.55pm on Saturday. The fire started in one and spread to three of the other former outside toilets.

Pumps out of action

SOUTH Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s troubled fleet of Combined Aerial Rescue Pumps was out of action more than 150 times in its first eight months of service because of mechanical alerts, new figures reveal.

The controversial £2.7m vehicles, which had to be modified after being found to be too heavy for the roads, have been plagued with problems. But a safety report by independent engineers, completed for the fire service, has found no evidence of mechanical failure.

Laptop stolen

A LAPTOP was stolen from a house on Rushdale Road, Meersbrook, Sheffield, after it was left on display. The thief smashed a window to grab the computer last Monday night. Police are also investigating after a boiler was stolen from a house on Bowshaw Avenue, Batemoor, Sheffield

Thefts charges

THREE men have been charged in connection with 18 thefts from vending machines at pubs and supermarkets across Derbyshire, including Chesterfield. The men, from Portsmouth, Southsea and Poole, are charged with conspiracy to steal over a 10-day period.

A FIREFIGHTER is to spend a day a week at Chaucer School, Parson Cross, Sheffield, until April as part of an ‘embedded firefighter’ project aimed at improving links with young people and raising awareness of the dangers of fires.

A VOLVO found burning on Hawksworth Road, East Herringthorpe, Rotherham, last Wednesday night had been set alight deliberately. Firefighters tackled the blaze.

SHEDS have been broken into on the Meersbrook allotment plots and at Meadow View Road, Greenhill. Police are investigating.
