NEWS IN BRIEF: Biker killed in crash near Clumber Park

A MOTORCYCLIST died in a collision with a car near Clumber Park.

The biker, who has not yet been named by police, was travelling along the A614 when he was in collision with a blue Ford Mondeo at 9.50am on Saturday. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said a man and woman in the Mondeo were unharmed but ‘extremely shaken’. Officers closed road until around 3pm. Witnesses are sought.

Candle starts fire

A CANDLE left burning in a Sheffield restaurant overnight on Friday into Saturday sparked a small fire which filled the venue with smoke.

Staff discovered the fire at Cafe Rouge on Ecclesall Road when they turned up for work on Saturday morning.

A table centrepiece candle had melted the decorative balls around it - smoke-logging the restaurant. Police had to close off the road to traffic while fire engines were parked outside for around an hour. The restaurant re-opened for business as normal in the afternoon.

Cabin arson attack

A PORTABLE cabin was set alight in an arson attack on a building site in Rotherham. Firefighters from Darnall station in Sheffield were called to deal with blaze on Field View, Brinsworth, where new homes are being built, at 9pm on Saturday.

The same firefighters were also called to a wheelie bin fire on the skate park off Orchard Way, Brinsworth, at 1.45am yesterday, and a car found engulfed in flames on Parkway Avenue, Darnall, at 3.30am.

Rubbish set alight

A PILE of rubbish was set alight behind flats on Muglet Lane, Rotherham, in the early hours of Saturday. The fire was also close to nearby shops, but crews prevented the flames from spreading.

Speed crackdown

COMMUNITY Speed Watch volunteers have been helping police traffic driving through Froggatt in a crackdown on speeding. In just over an hour the group found 13 motorists breaking the limit.

House burgled

A HOUSE was burgled on Slate Street, Heeley, Sheffield, after a door was left insecure. Officers are also investigating the break-in of a shed on Norton Avenue, Norton, last Friday morning.

ADVICE on home security was handed out from a mobile police station. Free lightbulbs, ‘power-down plugs’ and information on energy saving were given out in Hasland and St Leonards, Chesterfield.

POLICE and housing officers take to the streets on March 15 to find out residents’ concerns in Shirland near Chesterfield. Bobbies will join Rykneld Homes staff on Byron Street at 9.30am.

A VOLKSWAGEN Golf was dumped in a field off Littleworth Lane, Monk Bretton, Barnsley, and set alight. Firefighters tackled the blaze at 6.15am yesterday.

A WOMAN was only slightly injured after crashing her Hyundai Coupe car into the back of a slow-moving abnormal load on the southbound stretch of the M1 in South Yorkshire and spinning across the carriageway. Police closed the road, close to junction 37 at Dodworth, Barnsley, until the vehicles involved were moved. Firefighters were called to the scene as a precaution.
