Detectives trying to establish how a man sustained life threatening injuries are urging anyone with information to come forward.
A 33-year-old man was found on Rotherham Road, Cundy Cross, Barnsley, on Tuesday night but detectives do not yet know what happened to him.
His condition has now stabilised but he is still classed as ‘critical’ by medics.
A damaged vehicle recovered near to where the man was found is being examined by officers and a man and a woman connected to the vehicle have been arrested and are assisting police with enquiries.
A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “The circumstances of the incident are still unclear.
“Officers are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area between 10.30pm and 11.30pm to please call the police.”
