Murder probe into death after attack on South Yorkshire street
Police were called to Swinburne Place, Herringthorpe, Rotherham, following reports that a man had been assaulted.
When officers arrived they found a 59-year-old man with serious injuries.
He was taken to Rotherham District General Hospital for treatment but later died.
A 55-year-old man was arrested at the scene and was quizzed by detectives yesterday on suspicion of murder.
Police officers taped off a bungalow where the assault is believed to have occurred and officers stood guard yesterday to protect the crime scene.
Neighbour Paul Senior, aged 49, said: “The man who has died and his friend were always walking backwards and forwards to the shop.
“It is sad that something like this has happened here – it’s such a quiet place normally, so it unnerves you.”
Neighbour Albert Meekin added: “I knew the victim and his friend.
“I had no problems with them at all. They always spoke and had a laugh with me.
“It was a shock to see the ambulance and stretcher coming out and at first I thought somebody must have been ill so to find out police are treating it as murder is shocking and upsetting.”
