Masked gunman hunted by police in Doncaster

A masked man armed with a gun raided a Mexborough newsagents, police have revealed.

The armed robber, who was wearing a black balaclava, struck at Windells Newsagents, Doncaster Road, at 6.50pm on Bonfire Night.

He threatened a cashier working in the shop before stealing the till, which contained around £100.

A police search is now underway to find the robber.

He was white, around 5ft 11ins and of a medium build.

He was wearing a black hooded top with a white zip and white tassels from the hood, black jogging bottoms with three white horizontal stripes across the knees and white gloves.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Police in Doncaster are appealing for information following a reported robbery at a newsagents in Mexborough earlier this month.

“At around 6.50pm on Thursday, November 5 it is reported that a man entered Windells Newsagents in Doncaster Road, Mexborough, holding a gun.

“The man, who was wearing a black mask with eye holes cut out, threatened the cashier before taking the cash register.

“Officers believe there was about £100 in the register.

“No one was injured but the staff member was left extremely shaken by the incident.

“The man is thought to have left the shop, heading towards Hirst Gate.

“There are a number of businesses and houses along Doncaster Road and officers are appealing for anyone who may have seen anything suspicious at the time of the incident to get in touch.”
