DETECTIVES trying to trace a collection of war medals stolen during a burglary in Sheffield have made an arrest.
The 200 medals were taken from a safe in a burglary at a house on Toll Bar Road, Gleadless, in March.
The collection belonged to 60-year-old Keith Whitehead’s late father, Alan, and dated back to the 1700s. They included a distinctive Crimean charge of the light brigade medal.
Police arrested a 22-year-old man as part of their inquiries into the burglary after a retired police officer spotted a war medal on auction site eBay and alerted South Yorkshire Police.
The retired bobby, a medal enthusiast, knew a haul of medals had been stolen from Sheffield and became suspicious.
The medal was traced to a legitimate collector in Wakefield, who had bought it from a man in Scarborough - who had bought it from a man in Sheffield.
During their inquiries officers recovered over 100 medals, and want to hear from anyone else who may have had any stolen. Call 101.
