A 27-year-old man has been arrested today on suspicion of murder following the death of a man in Sheffield city centre over the weekend.

The 42-year-old victim has also been named by police as Jon-Paul Smith, who was originally from Liverpool.

Police were called at around 11.50pm on Friday, September 5, to the junction of West Street and Eldon Street following reports of an assault.

Mr Smith was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries where he died on Saturday morning.

A 27-year-old man was arrested today on suspicion of murder and is in police custody being questioned by officers.

Two other men had previously been arrested in connection with the incident.

A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and a 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assisting offenders.

Both have been bailed while the investigation continues.

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to come forward.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: “Officers are keen to hear from anyone who was in the West Street area on Friday night, who may have witnessed the incident.”

The police have previously said Mr Smith died from head injuries.
