A MAN has been arrested in connection with a serious assault on a South Yorkshire street which left another man in hospital with serious head injuries.

The victim, aged in his 40s, was rushed to Sheffield’s Royal Hallamshire Hospital for emergency treatment after he was found injured in Wombwell, Barnsley.

Police erected a white tent over the spot where the injured man was found, near Tesco Express on High Street, and cordoned off the road from the Yorkshire Bank to the end of the parade of shops.

Officers stood guard while forensic exerts examined the scene for clues.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Police are investigating a serious assault that happened around 9pm on Tuesday in High Street, Wombwell. A man in his early 40s sustained head injuries and is currently detained at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.”

Crowds yesterday gathered outside the police cordon to watch the police activity.

Police are asking anyone with information about the attack to call 0114 2202020 and quote incident number 34 of Wednesday, September 21.

Angela Thompson, who works in King’s Bacon Shop, on the street, said: “It was a shock to come to work to see the tent and all the police outside.

“You don’t expect to see this on your doorstep.

“Nobody from the police told us what happened, you just hear different things from different people coming in – it’s frightening really.”

High Street in Wombwell was reopened to traffic around 2.30pm yesterday after being closed to allow officers to make initial enquiries at the scene. A police tent and cordon remains in place but pedestrians and traffic are able to use the road.

Officers said a local man was arrested yesterday afternoon and has been assisting police with their enquiries.

The victim, who is from Wombwell, remains in the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Meanwhile, detectives in Chesterfield are investigating a stabbing on a street in Chesterfield.

A 35-year-old man was walking on South Street North, New Whittington, when he was ambushed by two men.

They struck him over the head and he fell to the ground.

During the scuffle he was stabbed in the leg and buttock before the attackers ran off towards High Street,

Police said the victim was taken to Chesterfield and District Royal Hospital where we was treated for cuts to his head and stab wounds.

One of the attackers was white and wearing a grey padded jacket with the hood up.

The other was Asian, dressed in black clothes and also had a hood.
