Detectives trying to establish how a man sustained life threatening injuries are urging anyone with information to come forward.
The 33-year-old was found on Rotherham Road, Cundy Cross, Barnsley, on Tuesday night - but detectives have yet to establish what happened to him.
His condition has now stabilised, but he is still classed as ‘critical’ by medics.
A damaged vehicle recovered near to where the man was found is being examined by officers, and a man and a woman connected to the vehicle were arrested and later bailed.
A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “The circumstances of the incident are still unclear. Officers are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area between 10.30pm and 11.30pm to call the police.”
