A man was airlifted to hospital in Sheffield after falling 50ft down a hillside during a fell race.

The 45-year-old, from Edale, had been competing in the ‘Edale Beer Barrel Race’, between the Snake Inn and Edale, when he slipped and fell whilst descending from the Kinder Plateau between Upper and Nether Tor, high above the Grindsbrook Valley.

When members of Buxton and Edale Mountain Rescue Teams located him yesterday he was suffering from reduced consciousness.

A Buxton Mountain Rescue Team spokesman said: “Early reports indicated a simple accident in Grindsbrook Clough, Edale, on the valley path, but the reality turned out to be different.

“The casualty was assessed by the Edale paramedics and a doctor, a head injury was suspected and a decision was taken to request an RAF Sea King helicopter for an urgent evacuation.”

He was taken to the Northern General Hospital.
