A MAN has appeared in court accused of raping a city woman as she made her way home after a night out.

Wasim Akram, aged 23, of London Road, Sharrow, was charged with the sex attack on Monday night and appeared before Sheffield magistrates yesterday.

He was remanded in custody for a week until his case is scheduled for mention at Sheffield Crown Court.

Akram was arrested after police launched a huge manhunt when a 47-year-old mother and grandmother was raped in a wooded area off Langsett Road, Hillsborough.

She told police she was standing near to the Bamforth Street tram stop when a man called for her help. When she walked over to him he dragged her into bushes and attacked her.

The woman had been on a night out in Hillsborough with a friend and was making her way home when her attacker struck.

She flagged down a passing taxi to take her home afterwards and raised the alarm.

Speaking afterwards she said the attack had destroyed her faith in human nature and she would never trust or offer help to anyone ever again.
