Police said he approached a man working behind the counter and ordered him to hand over takings from the till.

The robber was handed money and fled the scene.

He was aged in his early 20s, slim, 5ft 11ins tall and spoke with a local accent.

The shop worker was unharmed but traumatised by his ordeal.

Detective Constable Newman Holt, from South Yorkshire Police’s robbery unit, said: “We are still looking into the exact circumstances of the incident. It is too early to say whether it is a one off.

“The victim was working behind the counter when the suspect walked in and produced a machete.

“Demands for money were made and some cash was handed over.

“Fortunately the victim and others working in the shop at the time were unharmed.

“We believe the suspect ran off on foot and we would like to hear from anyone in the Nether Edge area at the time who saw anyone acting suspiciously around the Sainsbury’s Local store.”

Anyone with information about the raid should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
