A MAN who admitted killing his ex-BBC Radio Sheffield presenter father with a hammer has been given a hospital order.
Joseph Cooper violently beat dad Winton, aged 64, to death on April 15, 2011, at the Dorset cottage they shared.
The 24-year-old admitted manslaughter through diminished responsibility at a hearing last year and was given an interim order while assessments were carried out.
Under the order, he can only be discharged from hospital with the consent of the justice secretary or by a Mental Health Tribunal.
Winchester Crown Court heard Joseph Cooper broke a hammer handle in half as he inflicted the appalling injuries on his father.
His guilty manslaughter plea was accepted after reports found he was mentally ill.
Mr Cooper was found at his cottage in Marnhull, near Sturminster Newton, on the 22nd anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, which he had reported on in 1989.
