Homes across South Yorkshire are to be made more secure thanks to a grant from the county’s Police and Crime Commissioner.

Dr Alan Billings donated the £15,432 to Yorkshire Housing to carry out home security checks and fit window locks and door chains in Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster.

The housing association will be working with South Yorkshire Police to target burglary hotspots in a bid to reduce break-ins.

Dr Billings awarded the cash as part of his Community Grant Scheme, which helps local groups play a part in tackling crime.

He said: “The funding will boost the work already being done to improve security and will go a long way to helping people feel safer in their homes.

“I am pleased Yorkshire Housing are working closely with vulnerable people in their communities. By encouraging them to make changes they are making it more difficult for criminals.”
