A WOMAN found murdered at her Sheffield home was a grandmother in her 50s - who had just been told the cancer she had beaten once before had come back.
Police were called to a house in Lister Road, Walkley, at 7.20am yesterday.
The victim was named locally by horrified neighbours as mother-of-one Margaret Hobson, aged 57, who lived with her husband Michael and who had a young granddaughter.
Locals said the couple’s son, Scott, who is in his 30s, had also been living at home with his parents after serving with the Army.
Residents told The Star of their shock as Lister Road was cordoned off and a forensics team searched for clues.
One woman in neighbouring Woodview Road said a man had been seen wandering the area covered in blood early in the morning.
A man on a nearby street said he woke at 8am to the sound of a police car siren - and heard a police officer shouting at someone to ‘get down on the ground’.
Officers spent the morning conducting door-to-door inquiries, while the South Yorkshire Police helicopter circled the air above.
The Hobsons are believed to have lived on Lister Road for 28 years.
Clare Hillon, aged 22, and her mother Lily, 57, lived next door to the Hobsons for more than a decade. The mother and daughter were at work together in the Perfect Pies cafe on South Road when they heard the news.
Clare, of Hammerton Road, Walkey, said: “We lived next door from when I was a baby until I was 10 or 11. She was a lovely lady, the nicest woman in the world.
“She had recently found out that her cancer had come back.
“She was quite well-known in the area. Her and her husband Michael used to drink in The Sportsman’s Inn at the top of the road before it was turned into flats.”
Mrs Hillon, of Langsett Road, Walkley, said: “I only saw her on the bus yesterday with her granddaughter. I can’t believe it.”
Mrs Hobson’s next door neighbour, Wilfred Frost, said: “The first thing I knew was this morning, when police turned up next door. I’ve never seen anything like that before.
“I’ve known her for years, she was a really well-liked person.”
Roy Wood and Pat Scholey, of Arnold Street behind Lister Road, could see a white police tent which had been set up in the victim’s garden visible from their doorstep.
Pat said: “I am very shocked. We’ve lived here for nearly 18 years and nothing like this has ever happened.”
A 32-year-old Sheffield man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and was today still in police custody assisting with the investigation.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesman confirmed a murder investigation had begun “after the body of a woman was found at an address on Lister Road”.
