Further arrest in South Yorkshire murder investigation

Detectives investigating the death of Barnsley man Richard Broughton have arrested a 25-year-old man in connection with his death.

The man, who was arrested on Friday night on suspicion of murder, currently remains in police custody.

Mr Broughton, 37, was taken to hospital after an altercation in the village of Elsecar on Friday, April 28.

It is believed that he was hit by a car during the incident which took place in Welland Crescent just before 7pm.

Mr Broughton suffered fatal injuries and died two days later.

John Paul Jones, 23, of Welland Crescent, Elsecar, has already appeared before Barnsley Magistrates’ Court charged with affray and witness intimidation in relation to Mr Broughton's death. He was remanded into custody to appear before Sheffield Crown Court on May 31.

A 35-year-old man arrested on suspicion of violent disorder on May 1 has been released under investigation while enquiries continue.
