Detectives investigating the brutal murder of a man were questioning four people including two teenagers from South Yorkshire.

Two 16-year-old males and a 37-year-old woman were arrested in the Bentley and Askern areas of Doncaster on suspicion of murder after the man was assaulted by several people in the quiet village of Thorpe near Leeds at the weekend.

West Yorkshire Police said a man, aged 40, had also been arrested in the Wombwell area of Barnsley.

Armed officers from South Yorkshire Police helped their colleagues from West Yorkshire to detain the man.

The 57-year-old man who died after the assault, and has not yet being named, was allegedly attacked by a gang who smashed their way into a property after arriving in a vehicle.

Police were called to the house in Thorpe after reports of a disturbance at around 7.23pm on Saturday.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “A 57-year-old man was seriously assaulted by a number of men who had arrived in a vehicle.”

The victim was taken to Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield before being transferred to Leeds General Infirmary for treatment to head injuries but he died in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police remained at the property, where most of the front windows were smashed and the driveway was covered in skid marks, yesterday.

The four people arrested remain in custody as police enquiries into the killing continue.
