A man arrested by police on suspicion of carrying a firearm remains in custody in Sheffield today.

The 30-year-old was arrested on Abbeydale Road, at its junction with Empire Road, after a member of the public reported concerns to police officers on patrol in the area yesterday.

Police said the suspect was arrested after he was knocked off his bike during a police pursuit.

A police forensic expert in a protective white suit and gloves was spotted examining a gun at the scene of the incident.

The wooden handled revolver was bagged up with other items recovered from the scene.

The bike the suspect was riding through the city during the pursuit ended up under the wheel of a marked police 4x4.

Armed officers were involved in the operation to apprehend the man.

The area was cordoned off with police tape and vehicles while a full forensic examination of the area was carried out.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said the incident had not been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which can be asked to look at incidents of police contact, including

collisions involving police vehicles.

Call 101 with information.
