MOTORISTS are warned they face a £500 fine if caught driving without a seatbelt.
A new road safety campaign launched in South Yorkshire will see drivers without seatbelts issued with £60 on-the-spot fixed penalty notices.
Those who contest them and end up in court could face up to £500 fines.
Motorists are also responsible for anyone aged under 14 not wearing a seatbelt in their cars, and face a £60 penalty for each child failing to comply.
Superintendent Eddie Murphy, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “Whether you’re in your own car, driving with a friend, or a passenger in a taxi it is vital you wear your seatbelt. It could save your life in a collision.”
