Former Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley striker Nile Ranger said he was shocked to be arrested for rape as he had never had sex with a woman against her wishes.
Ranger, 22, denies raping a woman at the Carlton Hotel, Jesmond, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in January last year.
Prosecutors claim the woman was too drunk to consent and has no memory of what happened.
However, Ranger says she willingly had sex with him.
He told Newcastle Crown Court today: “She was up for coming back to the hotel.
“I was shocked to be arrested. I know I’m not a rapist.”
Ranger, who admitted he has previous convictions as a youth for robbery, burglary and handling stolen goods, said he enjoyed the attention of women as his footballing profile increased.
Swindon Town striker Ranger played for Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday on loan from Newcastle United during the 2011/12 season.
The trial continues.
