News: Local, national and international news 24-hours a day.

TWO men arrested by police over one of two shootings in Sheffield on New Year’s Day spent yesterday in custody.

Officers arrested the suspects, who are aged 27 and 29 and local, in the early hours of Thursday on suspicion of attempted murder.

They swooped on the pair as part of an investigation into a gun attack on an area of grassland on Halfway Gardens, Halfway, at around 3am on Tuesday, in which an 18-year-old man was blasted in his abdomen.

Detectives quizzed the pair about the attack throughout yesterday while other officers continued to investigate the case.

They still want to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or from anyone with information about the attack.

Less than two hours after the shooting a 45-year-old man from Manor, Sheffield, was shot on London Road near to Hill Street, near the city centre.

He turned up seeking help at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, at around 4.55am, with a gunshot wound to his shoulder.

He was taken to the Northern General Hospital, where his condition is described as serious.

Police sealed off both crime scenes on New Year’s Day.

Anyone with information about the Halfway shooting should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 546 of the 1 January.

To pass on information about the London Road shooting quote incident number 737 of the same date.

Crimestoppers can also be contacted, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
