A SHEFFIELD man is among a gang of 16 accused of a £6 million construction industry tax fraud scam.

John Beatty, of Western Road, Crookes, was among 13 men and three women who appeared at Birmingham Magistrates Court charged with conspiring to cheat the Inland Revenue of VAT, income tax, national insurance contributions and corporation tax as well as money laundering offences.

They were arrested in September 2009 as part of a HM Revenue & Customs probe into a suspected multi-million pound fraud believed to have been operating across the West Midlands, Staffordshire, London and Manchester.

The suspects have been bailed until September 5, when they will appear at Birmingham Crown Court.
