POLICE stopped 34 vehicles in Sheffield in a one-day blitz on metal thefts across the city.
Checkpoints were set up on Bramall Lane and Penistone Road and, while officers were speaking to drivers about whether they were carrying any metal, the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency checked the vehicles to make sure they were roadworthy.
Nobody was arrested for metal theft offences but seven drivers had their vehicles removed from the road because of serious defects.
PC Louise Atha, from Broomhill Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “The public can be reassured that police do take metal thefts very seriously.
“We would urge people to be vigilant and mark any property of any value that could be targeted by metal thieves.
“Through partnership working we have achieved some good results and we will look to repeat this initiative in the future.
“I would urge anyone with any information or who may have witnessed this type of crime or who has been a victim of scrap metal thefts to report this to the police.”
