A TERRIFIED pensioner was dragged from her car and thrown to the ground by a thug who then leapt into her vehicle and sped off, police have revealed.
The 78-year-old has been left with head and neck injuries after the carjacking as she was waiting at traffic lights on Bellhouse Road, near Hatfield House Lane in Shiregreen, Sheffield.
The woman was sitting in the driver’s seat of her silver Daihatsu when a man approached, opened the driver’s door, and ordered her out. He then jumped into the car and drove off.
A 27-year-old man was last night in police custody having been arrested by police.
Detectives today confirmed the pensioner had suffered head and neck injuries - but urged other motorists not to worry.
“It was a very frightening experience for this lady who has been left shaken by the attack,” said Detective Chief Inspector Bob Chapman from South Yorkshire Police.
“I would like to point out this kind of offence is extremely rare, and people should be reassured by that.
“South Yorkshire Police take incidents such as this extremely seriously and acted quickly to make an arrest.”
The woman’s car was found the following day on Budwith Road in Brightside. A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman confirmed: “A 78-year-old woman was stationary in her car at traffic lights when a man approached the car, opened the driver’s door and told her to get out of the car.
“The man then jumped into the woman’s car and drove off.
“The elderly woman sustained minor injuries to her head and neck as a result.”
The carjacking comes five days after a passenger was attacked, and the van in which he was travelling was stolen, by a conman who struck in Doncaster.
The van was stationary in traffic on Leger Way when a man approached the passenger window and said the driver had a flat tyre. When the driver and passenger got out to examine the vehicle the conman punched the passenger twice, leapt into the van, locked the doors, turned the van around, and drove off.
The van was later found abandoned on Coningsburgh Road in Edenthorpe.
The Sheffield carjacking happened at around 9pm on Wednesday. Police want to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident, and anyone who saw the car - a Silver Daihatsu Charade, with an 04 plate - after it was stolen.
