Broker’s warning on metal thefts

Sheffield insurance broker IFM Insurance is urging businesses to take extra precautions following a dramatic rise in the volume of metal thefts.

IFM says South Yorkshire has the fourth highest incidence of metal theft in the country, with incidents rising 46 per cent last year.

The firm says companies should check doors and windows are secured, consider using temporary fencing, bollards, anti-climb paint and barbed wire, install electronic security systems and carry out extra inspections of unoccupied buildings.

It adds that manned security is not always the cheapest method of protecting a site, but there may be a case for using guards temporarily to get a situation under control.
