A TEENAGE girl was subjected to a ‘serious sexual assault’ in Sheffield last night, after she chased after a man who had snatched her handbag.
Police have put on extra patrols in the Netherthorpe area and are appealing for information from witnesses.
An 18-year-old Japanese tourist was walking through Netherthorpe at around 7.30pm on Friday evening, when a man snatched her bag on the corner of Hammond Street and Bellefield Street.
She chased after him to a wooded area nearby, on the edge of the Ponderosa park.
The woman claims she was then subjected to a sexual assault.
A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said: “Police investigating an allegation of a serious sexual assault on a young Japanese woman in the Netherthorpe area of Sheffield are urgently appealing for information from the public.
“The man allegedly snatched this woman’s handbag and she gave chase to a nearby wooded area.
“The woman was then allegedly subjected to a serious sexual assault by the same man, which has left her extremely traumatised and shaken.”
Police described the attacker as black, in his twenties, approximately 1.8 metres tall, medium build with short dark hair and no facial hair.
He was wearing a royal blue hooded jacket and dark trousers or jeans.
The spokeswoman added: “Police would like to reassure the public that this is an isolated incident and extra patrols have now been put in place in the Netherthorpe area.”
