A MAN stabbed to death on a South Yorkshire street over the weekend has been named by police.

Philip Smith, aged 36, of Stotfold Drove, Thurscoe, was fatally injured on Saturday afternoon after a disturbance broke out on nearby Church Street.

He was rushed to Barnsley District General Hospital, but medics were unable to save him.

A post mortem examination confirmed local speculation that Mr Smith had been stabbed.

Police said a man arrested on suspicion of murder was still in custody late last night.

Three other arrested on suspicion of violent disorder have been bailed pending further enquiries.

Detective Superintendent Andy Thompson, the senior investigating officer, said: “Extensive house-to-house and forensic enquiries have been taking place to establish the facts in this case.

“I still wish to hear from anyone who has any information or who witnessed the disturbance in Thurnscoe on Saturday afternoon.”

Anyone with information should call the South Yorkshire Police incident room on 01709 443507.
