A South Yorkshire man has appeared in court charged with fraud by false representation following three alleged offences in June.

Ian Lawson, of Cedar Crescent, Barnsley, appeared at the town’s magistrates’ court accused of charging an 85-year-old man for gardening work alleged never to have been carried out.

He is also accused of charging an 83-year-old man paid for building work reported to have never taken place.

The third charge relates to a 79-year-old Barnsley woman alleged to have been defrauded of more than £54,000 since August.

Lawson, aged 35, was remanded in custody to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday, November 18.

Pleas to the three charges have not yet been entered.
