Residents were evacuated from a Sheffield hotel today after a room was set alight in an early morning arson attack.

The blaze at the Florentine, Tapton Park Road, Ranmoor, was discovered at 6am.

A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson.

Firefighters from Sheffield’s Central, Darnall, Rivelin and Mansfield Park fire stations responded to the 999 call for help and spent around 90 minutes at the scene.

They discovered some bedding alight in a ground floor room and extinguished the flames.

Some hotel residents were evacuated while firefighters dealt with the incident. Nobody was hurt.

A fire service investigation established that the blaze was started deliberately.

Police were informed of the arson attack at the hotel, formerly known as the Fulwood Inn, and carried out an examination of the scene.

The Victorian hotel, run by Marston’s, underwent a £700,00 refurbishment earlier this year.

A number of other arson attacks were dealt with by firefighters over the weekend including a Ford Fiesta torched on Charnock Dale Road, Charnock, Sheffield, at 4am on Saturday.

The night before crews dealt with a derelict caravan set alight on an allotment on Vale Road, Thrybergh, Rotherham.

Anyone with information about the blaze at the Florentine should call South Yorkshire Police or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
