The Business Crime Reduction Centre in Sheffield is hosting a session on April Fool’s Day on how to avoid being scammed.
A current scam involves cold-callers ringing firms and individuals and offering first refusal on new web addresses.
Fraudsters are said to be calling businesses using high-pressure sales techniques to con them into paying excessive fees for domain names by claiming a competitor is just about to buy the one of interest to them.
In reality, the domain name is either non-existent or worthless to sell on.
The Business Crime Reduction Centre in Sheffield is a partnership with Yorkshire-based charity, People United Against Crime and South Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and Humberside police forces.
