South Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner has packed a punch with a Sheffield boxing club with a £4,494 donation.

Dr Alan Billings awarded the cash to Sheffield City Boxing Club in Sharrow from his Community Grant scheme to help provide a constructive activity for young people in a hid to get them off the streets and away from petty crime and

vandalism.

The gym, based inside The Old Sharrow Junior School, is used by children from all backgrounds and countries.

Commissioner Billings said: “This local gym provides an excellent opportunity for the young people to come along learn new skills and build respect for themselves and others.

“This funding will help them maintain the equipment and train the coaches.”

Of the 170 members currently registered, the majority are between the ages of seven and 30 and live in and around Sharrow from Asian, Eastern European, Indian, Afro-Caribbean, Chinese, Somali, Iranian and white British

communities.

Head coach Brendan Warburton said: “As many as 30 boxers are off the streets each night and engaging in activities that build respect for themselves and others.”
