Craftsmen ready to bowl over Hollywood's Russell Crowe

HOLLYWOOD star Russell Crowe will raise a drink to the skill of three Sheffield craftsmen after they made dozens of bowls for a new Robin Hood movie.

Robin Wood, Owen Waterhouse and David Allison have made four wood and silver drinking vessels called mazers, six massive beech bowls and a set of 30 eating bowls for use in director Ridley Scott's new film Nottingham.

Robin and Owen travelled the country studying original mazers, including a collection at the British Museum, to ensure they were authentic.

They then conducted extensive trials to work out how the originals were made and called in David, who has workshops in Sheffield city centre, to help "spin" the silver.

Owen, who is currently doing an MA in silver-smithing at Sheffield Hallam University, said: "I can't wait to see my bowls on the big screen.

"It would be a real thrill to see Russell Crowe drinking from one of our mazers."

Owen has worked on various commissions including the St Leger Stakes Trophy for Doncaster Racecourse.

Filming of Nottingham starts next month. Russell Crowe will star as the Sheriff of Nottingham, with Sienna Miller as Maid Marian.

It has been reported that Leeds actor Sam Riley will take the role of Robin Hood.
