Crackdown on bogus callers

COLD callers are being shown the door thanks to a new password system in Sheffield.

Yorkshire Water has helped crack down on bogus callers by introducing a doorstep password scheme. It comes following a number of reports of a conman who pretended to be a window cleaner to trick his way into people’s addresses in Shirecliffe and Longley last month.

Under the scheme, customers agree a password with the company, which they can ask for when their property is visited.

South Yorkshire Police have praised the initiative for protecting vulnerable people.

Matt Thompson, of Yorkshire Water, said: “We’re determined to do everything we can to protect our customers from the evil scourge of bogus callers operating in Yorkshire.”
