A South Yorkshire Police officer pressured a 15-year-old girl to send him a naked picture of herself, a court heard.

PC Daniel Cookson, aged 30, got close to his victim on her 15th birthday and exchanged messages with her before the texts became ‘more sexualised’, a jury was told.

Sheffield Crown Court heard that Cookson, who was based in Rotherham, allegedly told the 15-year-old she had a ‘amazing body’ – but when she told him the relationship couldn’t progress he said the only way it would stop would be if she sent a picture of herself to him. Cookson – whose partner was pregnant with his child when he allegedly sent the messages – was using his work phone, prosecutor Stephen Wood said.

He said: “The messages became more and more sexualised and he told his victim she had an amazing body.

“She said she couldn’t take things any further. This prompted the defendant to tell his victim that the only way it would stop would be if she sent a picture of herself to him.

“She knew he meant naked because he had told her that he has pictures in his mind of her naked. So she did.”

“It shows an adult pressuring a child by effectively blackmailing her to send a naked photo of herself.”

The alleged offence came to light when the victim’s father saw a message on his daughter’s phone from Cookson in November 2013.

It read: “You know I think you have amazing boobs.”

The court heard how on the same night, Cookson allegedly called his victim’s mother and asked her not to involve the police.

On November 11, the victim went to visit a relative and began to explain in more detail about her contact with Cookson.

Following this, the police were contacted and Cookson, was arrested on November 12.

Mr Wood added that 569 text messages were exchanged between Cookson and his victim between August 14 and November 10.

Mr Wood said: “They seized the victim’s phone and were able to download messages which passed between the defendant and the victim via text and via Blackberry Messenger.

“We submit that they provide a telling insight into the way this defendant saw this relationship.”

Cookson, of Dickens Road, Worksop, denies causing a child to engage in sexual activity, while knowing she was under the age of 16, between March and November 2013.

The trial continues.
