A DIAMOND couple whose eyes first met across a crowded dance floor at Sheffield City Hall have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Mary and Ernest Barron, both aged 84, of Dore Road, Dore, Sheffield, marked their happy occasion with a party at Christian’s restaurant in Beauchief – joined by family and friends from as far afield as Germany.
The couple met in 1948 when Ernest was on leave from the Merchant Navy, but their time together was short as he had to return to sea.
But absence made the heart grow fonder and the couple were engaged three months after meeting.
Ernest, whose job was to ferry food supplies from New York to Liverpool and Hamburg, missed Mary so much he decided to hand in his notice.
He said: “I left a year after meeting Mary. The heartstrings were pulling a bit harder than the tugs on the Mersey.”
The couple were married at Norton Church in 1951 and spent three days on honeymoon in London.
They now have a daughter and two grandchildren.
Ernest said their secret was “give and take – love continues through that”.
