Councillors say no to extra pay

COUNCILLORS whose allowances were said to be ‘on the low side’ by an independent panel have rejected awarding themselves an increase.

Allowances for Chesterfield Council members begin at £4,377 per year and the independent panel concluded payments were “on the low side for a council of the size and status of Chesterfield”.

But Coun John Burrows, council leader, said: “We did not wish to see any overall increases in our allowances at a time when our employees will not have received a pay increase for two years.”
