A CROSS-party motion is to be passed by Sheffield Council urging residents to support aid agencies working in the aftermath of the Japanese tsunami.

Coun Pat Midgley, Labour communities spokeswoman, proposed the move which has also attracted the support of ruling Lib Dems.

She said: “What has happened in Japan is devastating – the scale of the disaster is hard for us to comprehend. Many thousands of people have died and thousands more have lost their homes.

“I would urge people to support the appeal organised by the British Red Cross which will raise vital funds to help the Japanese people recover from this devastating natural disaster over the coming months and years.”

The motion will be passed at a full meeting of Sheffield Council on Wednesday and the council will also be sending a message of support to Japan via twin town Kawasaki.
