More than 50,000 people have signed a petition – led by a Sheffield councillor – to feature First World War nurse Edith Cavel on a £2 coin.
Coun Sioned-Mair Richards, Sheffield Council Labour member for Shiregreen and Brightside, is leading the campaign to mark the memory of the war heroine who was executed for her work by a German firing squad in 1915.
Coun Richardssaid: “I’m delighted by this huge demonstration of support so far.
“It has been heart-warming to have been contacted by hundreds of people – including members of the Cavell family – who wanted to tell me about why Edith Cavell had been important to them.
“In the year in which we commemorate the First World War she should be honoured by her country as a woman who was one of the best.”
