Sheffield Hallam University is to become the first ever academic institution to sponsor the Tour de France.

The agreement was announced yesterday after talks with Tour organisers ASO through the region’s tourism authority Welcome to Yorkshire.

Part of the deal will see the university partner with the race to provide unique volunteering opportunities for students.

There will also be a series of public events to showcase the expertise of the university’s world-class sport research, including the science behind cycling.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Philip Jones said: “Our exclusive partnership with the Grand Départ continues Sheffield Hallam’s proud history of being a major educational partner at global sporting events. This is a natural fit for Sheffield Hallam. Exclusive volunteering and participation opportunities at the Grand Départ will be excellent additions to the CVs of our students.”

Welcome to Yorkshire marketing and sales director Peter Dodd added: “Sheffield Hallam University offers opportunities across many of its different faculties.

“This is a huge opportunity to showcase Sheffield and the wider area. Sheffield is great at events - it’s a sporting city and has a great sporting heritage.”
