Students’ spree to escape exam stress

A record 9,000 students hungry for a top bargain descended on Meadowhall for its Spring Student Lock-in event.

A range of discounts, giveaways, competitions and promotions were on offer from a number of high street stores exclusively for sixth form, college and university students.

It was a chance for the students to escape the stress of forthcoming examinations and coursework deadlines for one night and enjoy entertainment on the malls such as bucking broncos, tap dancing turkeys, surf simulators and live music.

James Melody, aged 18, and a student at Silverdale Sixth Form, said: “I had a great night at the Student Lock In – lots of entertainment on offer and some brilliant bargains – a great night out with my mates.”

Meadowhall events manager Alex Caley said: “The Spring Student Lock In has been a huge success – we have seen our biggest turnout yet with more than 9,000 students taking advantage of all the exclusive discounts from our high-street brands and food retailers. The atmosphere was absolutely fantastic too, with live music, Capital FM and lots of fun mall entertainment.

“May can be a tough month for students with the pressures of exams, projects and coursework to juggle, so we really enjoy giving them a little Meadowhall ‘me moment’ where they can let their hair down and enjoy themselves with friends.”

Retailers taking part in the lock-in included Urban Outfitters, Celeb Boutique, New Look, Schuh and Krispy Kreme.

Alex said: “We hold a number of exclusive shopping events throughout the year at Meadowhall and they always prove popular among our customers.

“In fact, we are hosting a special Ladies’ Night on May 29 with a great line-up including entertainers, musicians, celebrities, stalls, offers, discounts and competitions.”
