OLD and new have been combined to create a school for the 21st century in a north Sheffield community – after the completion of an £18 million refurbishment project.
Pupils are enjoying state-of-the-art facilities at Stocksbridge High School, one of the last in the city to be transformed by the Building Schools for the Future programme.
The original two-storey 1929 brick building has been kept but completely upgraded.
It now has larger windows and traditional slate roof, and is providing teaching facilities for design and technology, food technology, modern foreign languages, art, history and geography.
Contractor Vinci has also created an extensive new main two-storey building on the Shay House Lane site.
It contains a main hall, dining area, administration facilities, cafeteria, kitchens and science, maths, English and ICT classrooms.
The new school also now has an external performance plaza with tiered seating, along with an eating area, a car park for staff and guests, a science garden, a multi-use games area, soft landscaping and a three bedroom detached house for the caretaker.
Coun Jackie Drayton, council cabinet member for children and young people, said: “The transformation not only looks fantastic but more importantly for the many students, it will mean a fresher, improved educational environment.”
Vinci regional director Keith Shivers added: “The pupils and staff are really enthusiastic about their new high school.”
